Bergen County: a shrinking Indian-American community with a deep $5M+ tier
Bergen County's Asian Indian population dipped about 3% since 2015–19, yet 210 of the 558 people in our database there sit at $5M+.
Bergen County has about 35,300 residents of Asian Indian descent, 3.7% of the county [1][3]. That is slightly fewer than the 36,300 counted in the 2015–2019 survey, a decline of about 3% [1][2], while most New Jersey counties nearby grew.
Our own data tells a different story about depth. Of the 558 people in our database in Bergen County at $1M+, 210 are at $5M+, about 38% (our calculation) [8]. That is a much heavier upper tier than in the fast-growing suburbs to the south and west.
- 35,304 residents of Asian Indian descent (alone or in combination) in Bergen County, New Jersey, 2020–2024 average [1], or 3.7% of the population [3].
- -2.7% versus the 2015–2019 estimate of 36,301 [1][2] (our calculation).
- 558 people in the HeyAlbert database placed in Bergen County, New Jersey at an estimated $1M+, of whom 210 are in our $5M+ bands [8].

What the HeyAlbert database shows in Bergen County, New Jersey
HeyAlbert builds profiles of Indian-American individuals with an estimated net worth of $1M or more from public records, and every estimate is tied to a cited source. Our database currently places 558 such people in Bergen County, New Jersey [8]. That is a count of people we have found and estimated, not a census of wealthy households: our coverage is partial and uneven.
| Estimated net-worth band | People in our database |
|---|---|
| $1M–5M | 348 |
| $5M–15M | 163 |
| $25M+ (probable) | <25 |

Source: HeyAlbert database [8]. Cities with 25+ people at $1M+; cells under 25 shown as <25. The city is where our sources place the person; for some records it is a workplace rather than a home. Cities in our database are matched by name to the Census places and townships in the county; a few that straddle a county line are counted whole, and large cities that extend well beyond the county are left out.
The towns that lead our data are not the ones that lead the Census table. Englewood Cliffs (54 people, 33 at $5M+) and Saddle River (52, 30 at $5M+) top our list, followed by Franklin Lakes (52) and Upper Saddle River (46) [8]. Paramus, the largest Census community, has 44 people in our set [8]. Every one of these towns has fewer than 25 people in our $25M+ bands [8].
Why our Bergen County, New Jersey count looks the way it does
Each estimate in our database rests on a primary piece of public evidence. The mix differs from place to place, depending on which records we have been able to process, and it shapes the counts above more than any real difference in wealth does [8].
| Primary evidence for the estimate | People | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Home value (public assessor or listing records) | 296 | 53% |
| Other public signals (executive roles, company filings, gifts, pay) | 213 | 38% |
Source: HeyAlbert database [8], people at $1M+. Categories under 25 not shown.
Home values support 296 of our Bergen estimates and other public signals, such as executive roles and company filings, support 213 [8]. Patents, licenses and insider filings each add smaller numbers [8]. The mix points to established owners of high-value homes plus a meaningful group of executives.
What it means if you work with these families
Bergen is a market of settled wealth, not new arrivals. The number of residents is flat, but the families who are here skew toward the $5M+ bands and toward a handful of north-county towns. For advisors and nonprofits, that means fewer, larger relationships, often with succession and estate questions already on the table.
Methodology
Census figures are American Community Survey 5-year estimates for 2020–2024 and 2015–2019, Table B02018, using “Asian Indian, alone or in any combination” [1][2]. Total population comes from Table B01003 [3]. The Census Bureau changed how it codes detailed race responses in 2020, so part of the change between the two periods may reflect coding rather than migration. All estimates carry margins of error. Shares and growth rates are our calculations.
HeyAlbert counts are aggregates from our database as of October 2026 [8]. They include people we identified as likely of Indian origin with an estimated net worth of $1M or more, based on public records such as property assessments, professional licenses, patents, SEC filings and donor rolls. Coverage is partial and depends on which public records exist and which we have processed. These counts are not population totals. Any cell under 25 is suppressed, and we publish aggregates only, never individual records.
