Minnesota: a flat total hides a move from the Twin Cities core to the suburbs
Minnesota's Asian Indian population held at about 52,200, but Ramsey County fell 19% while Carver County more than doubled. Our database places 436 at $1M+.
Minnesota has about 52,200 residents of Asian Indian descent, 0.9% of the state, essentially the same as in the 2015–2019 survey [1][2][3].
Underneath that flat total, the community is moving. Ramsey County fell about 19% and Hennepin about 5%, while Carver County rose about 149%, from about 700 to about 1,700 [4][5]. Olmsted County, home to Rochester, grew about 37% [4][5].
- 52,192 residents of Asian Indian descent (alone or in combination) in Minnesota, 2020–2024 average [1], or 0.9% of the population [3].
- -0.1% versus the 2015–2019 estimate of 52,228 [1][2] (our calculation).
- 436 people in the HeyAlbert database placed in Minnesota at an estimated $1M+, of whom 84 are in our $5M+ bands [8].
Where Minnesota's Indian-American residents live, by county
The Census Bureau's American Community Survey counts 52,192 people who report Asian Indian ancestry, alone or with another group, in Minnesota [1]. Hennepin County holds 49% of them, and the three largest counties together hold 70% [4][5] (our calculation).

| County | 2020–2024 | 2015–2019 | Change | Share of county |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hennepin County | 25,709 | 26,957 | -5% | 2.0% |
| Dakota County | 6,360 | 5,717 | 11% | 1.4% |
| Ramsey County | 4,605 | 5,698 | -19% | 0.8% |
| Washington County | 3,295 | 3,112 | 6% | 1.2% |
| Olmsted County | 2,661 | 1,944 | 37% | 1.6% |
| Anoka County | 2,457 | 2,640 | -7% | 0.7% |
| Scott County | 2,292 | 2,027 | 13% | 1.5% |

Hennepin County still has about half of the state's community, about 25,700 people [4][5]. Dakota (about 6,400) and Ramsey (about 4,600) follow [4][5]. Among larger cities, Eden Prairie (7%) and Plymouth (6%) have the highest shares, then Shoreview, Maple Grove and Shakopee at about 4% [6].
The most concentrated communities
Raw counts favor big cities. Ranking places of 20,000+ residents by the share who report Asian Indian ancestry gives a different map [6][7]:
| Place | Asian Indian residents | Total population | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eden Prairie | 4,340 | 63,051 | 6.9% |
| Plymouth | 4,767 | 79,220 | 6.0% |
| Shoreview | 1,020 | 26,714 | 3.8% |
| Maple Grove | 2,592 | 71,173 | 3.6% |
| Shakopee | 1,669 | 46,012 | 3.6% |
| Eagan | 2,338 | 68,000 | 3.4% |
| Woodbury | 2,623 | 78,305 | 3.3% |
| Minnetonka | 1,632 | 53,064 | 3.1% |

What the HeyAlbert database shows in Minnesota
HeyAlbert builds profiles of Indian-American individuals with an estimated net worth of $1M or more from public records, and every estimate is tied to a cited source. Our database currently places 436 such people in Minnesota [8]. That is a count of people we have found and estimated, not a census of wealthy households: our coverage is partial and uneven.
| Estimated net-worth band | People in our database |
|---|---|
| $1M–5M | 352 |
| $5M–15M | 69 |
| $25M+ (probable) | <25 |
| $25M+ (likely) | <25 |
| Total, $1M+ | 436 |
Source: HeyAlbert database [8]. Bands are estimates from public evidence; “likely” and “probable” describe our confidence in the $25M+ tier. Cells under 25 are suppressed.
| City | $1M+ | of which $5M+ | of which $25M+ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minneapolis | 41 | <25 | <25 |
Source: HeyAlbert database [8]. Cities with 25+ people at $1M+; cells under 25 shown as <25. The city is where our sources place the person; for some records it is a workplace rather than a home.
Our database places 436 people in Minnesota at $1M+, 84 at $5M+ and fewer than 25 in our $25M+ bands [8]. Among cities, Minneapolis has 41 people in our set, fewer than 25 of them at $5M+; no other city reaches 25 [8]. The rest are spread across many suburbs.
Why our Minnesota count looks the way it does
Each estimate in our database rests on a primary piece of public evidence. The mix differs from place to place, depending on which records we have been able to process, and it shapes the counts above more than any real difference in wealth does [8].
| Primary evidence for the estimate | People | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Home value (public assessor or listing records) | 196 | 45% |
| Other public signals (executive roles, company filings, gifts, pay) | 142 | 33% |
| Physician (NPI registry; seniority and specialty estimate) | 98 | 22% |
Source: HeyAlbert database [8], people at $1M+. Categories under 25 not shown.
Home values support 196 of our estimates, other public signals 142 and physician estimates 98 [8]. Physicians are about 22% of our Minnesota set (our calculation) [8], a larger share than in most states we profile. Our coverage here is partial.
What it means if you work with these families
For advisors and nonprofits, Minnesota's community is stable in size but shifting to the outer suburbs and to Rochester. Physicians are a large part of the wealth we can see, which makes practice and retirement planning a natural opening.
Methodology
Census figures are American Community Survey 5-year estimates for 2020–2024 and 2015–2019, Table B02018, using “Asian Indian, alone or in any combination” [1][2]. Total population comes from Table B01003 [3]. The Census Bureau changed how it codes detailed race responses in 2020, so part of the change between the two periods may reflect coding rather than migration. All estimates carry margins of error. Shares and growth rates are our calculations.
HeyAlbert counts are aggregates from our database as of October 2026 [8]. They include people we identified as likely of Indian origin with an estimated net worth of $1M or more, based on public records such as property assessments, professional licenses, patents, SEC filings and donor rolls. Coverage is partial and depends on which public records exist and which we have processed. These counts are not population totals. Any cell under 25 is suppressed, and we publish aggregates only, never individual records.
